Willem F. Duisenberg (left), former Governor of De Nederlandsche Bank, became President of the European Monetary Institute on 1 July 1997. He succeeded Alexandre Lamfalussy.
The ECB was established in Frankfurt am Main on 1 June 1998. It replaced the European Monetary Institute.
