Let’s join forces!
On 1 January 2002, euro banknotes and coins were introduced in 12 European countries: Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Austria, Portugal and Finland.
In May 2004, the European Union welcomed ten new Member States - the Czech Republic, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia. Two years and eight months later, on 1 January 2007, the EU welcomed Bulgaria and Romania. By joining the EU, they undertook to adopt the euro as their currency at a later stage. Slovenia adopted the euro on 1 January 2007, followed by Cyprus and Malta one year later.
In the countries preparing to introduce the euro, the national authorities, the central banks and the European Central Bank (ECB) are working together to inform people about the euro banknotes and coins, and about the changeover to the new currency.
The ECB is now looking for partners to spread the message about euro banknotes and coins to a wide range of individuals or specific target groups. Any organisation that is interested, willing and able to do so can apply.
