This year’s art exhibition of the European Central Bank, the 16th in its series “Contemporary art from the Member States of the European Union”, takes us to Lithuania. With around 70 pieces from 21 artists spanning a variety of generations, the exhibition – which includes selected works from the collection of the Lithuanian central bank, our partner for this year – provides an extensive insight into the country’s art scene. With paintings, photographs, object art and videos, the exhibition has a range of genres and media on display, just as in previous years. Not least as a result of Lithuania’s capital city Vilnius being voted the European Capital of Culture 2009, Lithuanian art has attracted increasing international attention and made clear its contribution to Europe’s cultural riches and diversity.

Since 1997 the ECB has been exhibiting European contemporary art from the various EU Member States in the context of a series of exhibitions. Each exhibition is devoted to a different EU country and is organised in cooperation with the national central bank of the given country.
The ECB’s art collection is closely linked to this series of exhibitions and is primarily made up of the works of those artists who have featured in the exhibitions. The collection currently comprises 220 works of art by 80 artists from 17 different countries. In order to provide a deep insight into the European art scene, no specific theme or media focus has been singled out, such that the collection includes paintings, drawings, photography, graphics and other art pieces. With its commitment to art, the ECB aims to bring to the public arena the cultural diversity and artistic richness of Europe, thus contributing to the familiarisation, exchange and discovery of our commonalities. This commitment to art is based on the idea that a unified Europe means “diversity within the whole”, which in the world of culture should certainly be both alive and stimulated.
