The OMG was established as a sub-group of both the ECB Foreign Exchange Contact Group and the ECB Money Market Contact Group. This particular set-up was chosen in light of the synergies in the settlement of foreign exchange and money market transactions. Via the OMG, settlement experts in the financial market community maintain regular contact with the Eurosystem and with each other on operational matters of common interest. In addition, the OMG acts as a forum for responding to crisis situations that may arise in financial markets, in particular those affecting euro area participants.

The OMG is chaired by a representative from one of the member banks, with the chairmanship rotating every 2 years. The current chairman is Mr. René Steenhart, Head of Global Financial Markets Operations at the Rabobank. The group has around 20 members representing different commercial banks from all over Europe as well as the euro area national central banks. The participation is reviewed on a regular basis.
