The OMCG was initially established as a sub-group of both the ECB Foreign Exchange Contact Group and the ECB Money Market Contact Group and was originally named OMG. Via this group, settlement experts in the financial market community maintain regular contact with the Eurosystem and with each other on operational matters of common interest. In addition, the group acts as a forum for responding to crisis situations that may arise in financial markets, in particular those affecting euro area participants. As from 2012 the OMG has been upgraded to the level of Contact Group and has been redenominated the OMCG - Operational Managers Contact Group.

The OMCG is chaired by a representative of the European Central Bank, with the chairmanship rotating approx. every two to three years. The current chairman is Mr. Francesco Papadia, Director-General Markets Operations at the European Central Bank. The group has around 25 members, representing commercial banks from all over Europe as well as some of the euro area national central banks. The participation is reviewed on a regular basis.
